Imperfect Strangers, Lingophil’s audio story for intermediate French learners, follows a group of people at different stages of life whose paths cross during one fateful summer as they navigate bittersweet family relations and friendships, broken dreams, breakups, job hunts, financial struggles and much more.
Right from the start you’ll learn the everyday language you’ll need to understand the locals and get by in the real French spoken on the street.
At the same time you’ll be building the foundation of your linguistic skills by acquiring new and useful vocabulary, key grammar patterns, handy phrases to kick off a conversation and keep it going, and learning how to construct native-level sentences.
Once you’ve solidified the foundation of your language, the difficulty level increases with each Season, as the audio demands more of your listening comprehension and vocabulary skills. Memorization is subtly and effectively reinforced by repeating common expressions and patterns multiple times in different contexts throughout the course. Our Intensive Listening Comprehension Practice™ method is uniquely designed to help you learn content thoroughly for maximum retention.

Synopsis: Meet Camille, a twenty something year old struggling under the weight of her mother’s expectations, a divorced librarian and talented stage singer whose own career never went anywhere. An only child and the apple of her mom’s eye, Camille was pushed towards becoming a concert pianist. But that was not her dream, and she has yet to come to terms with dropping out of a prestigious conservatory and finding what she really wants to do with her life. Meanwhile, her quirky best friend Florence, who frequently hangs out with Camille at a Parisian neighborhood café, is trying to find suitable replacements for her temp job and her ex-boyfriend while being a substitute mother to her younger brother Timmy. Season 1 – B1 Starter builds a B1-level foundation by covering the essential vocabulary, grammar and tenses according to the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) while enhancing your comprehension of authentic French. You’ll sharpen your listening skills through real French conversations and learn the natural speech patterns and colloquial expressions that native speakers use every day. |

Synopsis: Florence learns that the waiter at her favorite café whom she has a crush on is a jazz musician at one of the top clubs in town. She manages to get his number and a Friday night date with him. After leaving the café, Camille tries to talk Florence into renting an apartment together so she can move out of her mother’s place, but Florence isn’t thrilled about the idea of paying rent for her indigent friend. Florence wants Camille to go out with her the next day, but Camille has plans to leave town and visit her aunt in Warsaw. Season 2 – B1 Intermediate builds on everything you learned in B1 Starter and raises the bar. The episodes feature richer dialogues, a wider range of tenses, and practical, real-world vocabulary for confident communication—while revisiting essential words and common sentence patterns from B1 Starter in new contexts so they truly stick. At the same time, you’ll sharpen your listening skills with faster native speech, learn to decode colloquial phrasing, and develop the fluency you need to handle everyday situations with ease.

Lingophil is an audio transcription course designed for intermediate-level students. It employs audio transcription technology using a method we call Intensive Listening Comprehension Practice (ILCP).
This innovative method allows you to progressively enhance your ability to understand conversational, native-level speech by listening to specially designed audio material, transcribing what you hear and creating your own transcript. A correction tool instantly shows your errors, which you can then compare with the master transcript. Grammar, usage and vocabulary tips are provided along the way to effectively guide and support you in your language learning journey.
If you prefer learning with videos rather than audio, book-learning, or if you don’t like typing on a keyboard, then Lingophil is probably not for you. However, if you enjoy learning with audio, tend to be a disciplined self-learner with a strong motivation to continuously improve your skills and want to attain a high level of proficiency in your target language, then Lingophil can effectively help you achieve your goals. Transcribing can be mentally intensive work, but it’s exciting to find out if you’ve understood correctly and rewarding and empowering to be able to recognize and clarify misunderstandings.
Becoming truly proficient in a foreign language requires long term focus and dedication. Our Intensive Listening Comprehension Practice™ method is uniquely designed to help you stay focused and learn our content thoroughly for maximum retention. Moving from intermediate to advanced isn’t just about learning more words. You often need to fill in gaps from your earlier attempts at learning the language. If you don’t take the time to fill in those gaps, your foundation won’t be as solid, which will make it harder or even impossible to take your language to an advanced level.
The difficulty level of Seasons 1 and 2 is roughly equivalent to the French level B1 of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). Some of the content goes beyond that level because the audios contain colloquial and idiomatic expressions as well as some verb tenses generally not found in learning material for level B1. To fully benefit from these Seasons, you should be at least lower intermediate level.
Yes, the difficulty level gradually increases with each Season, as the audio makes greater demands on your listening comprehension and vocabulary skills. Memorization is subtly and effectively reinforced by repeating common expressions and patterns multiple times in different contexts throughout the story.
You can start with Season 2 and use the short summaries on this page to keep up with the plot and the characters. Just keep in mind that the Seasons follow one continuous storyline and that annotations and exercises build on grammar concepts covered in earlier Seasons.
The story is presented in Seasons and Episodes, similar to a TV series. It’s like listening to a movie without the visuals where you just hear the voices and sound effects that make up an engaging story that teaches you vocabulary, grammar patterns, colloquial language and much more as you go along.
All audio material featured in the app is uniquely created for our courses and recorded by professional voice actors and actresses. It is not available anywhere else. You can meet some of the voices behind the characters in our story here.
The course is currently available for French, Spanish, German and Italian. The stories featured in the course are the same in each language. We add new Seasons several times a year.
Lingophil is a web application that runs in your browser. It requires an Internet connection. It runs on laptops, desktop computers, tablets and smartphones. Because the transcription exercises require you to type entire sentences, we recommend that you use Lingophil on a device with a standard keyboard, such as a laptop or a desktop computer.

The course is designed for intermediate-level learners. Using the CEFR as a benchmark, we recommend that you have at least the equivalent of an A2 level to fully benefit from the course.
